About Te Manahuna Consulting

Consulting with Purpose

My name is Rob Young and I have been working in the field of conservation and recreation management for 43 years. Initially with the National Park Service at Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park and then at the Bay of Islands Maritime and Historic Park.

After the formation of the Department of Conservation I moved back to the South Island and spent 24 years managing the Te Manahuna / Twizel Area in the heart of the South Island high country.  Since 2013 I have been running my own consulting business based in Twizel.

I am passionate about conservation and environmental issues and believe they are key pillars of New Zealand’s economic and social future.

Environmental Consulting

My experience is comprised of both managing a conservation business with 20-30 staff and working on a range of complex conservation issues. This has involved bringing the many facets of conservation together in a pragmatic manner to achieve positive outcomes for both conservation the community and business. In my time as a conservation manager I have worked with concessionaires, businesses, Government agencies, NGOs, universities, contractors, consultants, local bodies, local communities, iwi and landholders.

I am able to work with clients across the whole spectrum of the community and bring my expertise to help you achieve your goals. As a result of my extensive experience in the business I am also able to bring other contacts and colleagues with expertise to assist with interfacing your business in an environmentally sensitive and sustainable manner.

Mackenzie Wilding Conifer Management Strategy

2016

I developed a strategic plan for the management and control of wilding conifers in the Mackenzie Basin for the period 2016-2030. The key clients were ECAN , DOC, LINZ and the Mackenzie District Council.  This required consultation with 60 landholders and land managers and producing a plan with multiple goals, costings and mapping.

Visitor Risk Management for the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

2013 - 2020

This project involved developing a visitor risk framework and plan for the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.   This plan was used for evaluating the safety risks on the trail and subsequently putting in place both on site solutions to reduce risk and key communication messaging for trail users via several channels.  The plan is updated at regular intervals as more sections of the trail are completed.

Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail East Pukaki section

 2014 - present

This project began with the development of a Feasibility Study for the client, Mackenzie District Council, to evaluate the route options and costs for this 39km of trail.  Detailed planning of the route for the consenting process and construction began in 2016.  The project involved consultation with landholders and management agencies.  Currently the project is now being progressed in two stages.  Consents have now been obtained for 23km of the trail. Construction is planned once funding is sourced to complete this Stage 1 section.

Concession applications for clients to the Department of Conservation

2018- 2020

I successfully completed the concession application for the 300km Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, which was granted  in 2018.  Since then, I have been engaged by two skifields to complete concession applications for renewals of their concession. I have also completed a concession application is for the installation of a chairlift at Ohau.   In 2022 I completed a concession application for four moorings for a houseboat in Lake Brunner with two other professionals, a lawyer and landscape architect.  All of these projects require working with other professionals, clients and DOC to get a successful outcome. These processes require perseverance and a good knowledge of the concessions process.
